A 26-year-old man kicked a mailman in the face as the Post Office worker tried to deliver mail on Wednesday, police said.
Darien police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:
Shortly before 6 p.m., the mailman walked up the driveway at 90 Hecker Ave. to deliver a package when Michael Haggerty of Stamford approached him and forcefully demanded him to identify himself.
Before the mailman could respond, Haggerty kicked him in the face. The mailman fell to the ground and told Haggerty why he was there.
Haggerty apologized. The mailman reported the assault to police. When they arrived, they could see the mailman was injured. Darien EMS-Post 53 responded to the scene.
The mailman was wearing a dark blue U.S. Postal Service uniform, with branding on the jacket and hat.
Police spoke to Haggerty, who said the mailman hadn’t identified himself immediately, and at that point he kicked the man.
Haggerty, who lives on Cummings Avenue in Stamford, was charged with third-degree assault and later released on $250 bond. He is due to appear in state Superior Court in Stamford on Nov. 28.
