As one man distracted an elderly woman who didn’t speak English, two other men entered her home and stole foreign currency, Darien police said.

Police released details this week about the distraction burglary that occurred Sept. 28 on Herman Avenue .

At about 11 a.m., the woman was working in the front yard when she was approached by a man who began talking to her. She did not give police a detailed description of him. She couldn’t understand what he was talking about, then he began walking away, toward the back yard. She followed him as he continued to talk, and he pointed to a grassy area in the back yard.

The woman then went to a neighbor’s house to try to get help so that she could understand what the man was talking about.

A surveillance camera in the home showed two other men entering the house from the rear, walking through a hallway and putting on gloves. They went up to the second floor, then walked down the back stairs into the basement. Neither was seen holding anything. That was the last they were seen on the video recording.

The only thing discovered to be missing was $4,000 in Hong Kong dollars, equivalent to about $500 in United States currency. It had been in a closet of the master bedroom on the second floor. Nothing else was even out of place, and several other valuable items, such as electronic devices and jewelry, were left behind.

The video gave police an idea of what the burglars look like, but police did not release detailed descriptions. The woman said the man she talked to seemed to be about six feet in height, and the video showed that one of the burglars was that height, the other about 5 feet, 10 inches in height.

Police investigating the incident canvassed the neighborhood, but found no one who had seen or heard anything suspicious.
