The owner of Darien Window Cleaning Co., Steven Tarnowsky, 67, succumbed to injuries he received in a fatal fall at about 2 p.m. last Wednesday while cleaning the windows of a commercial building at 1950 Post Road in downtown Noroton, police said.

Darien police believe the fall was as the result of an unfortunate accident, the department said in a news release, which also said:

Police responded to an alleyway by the building after receiving a report of a male falling from a ladder. On arrival, officers determined that the victim was unresponsive and had received life-threatening injuries.

They immediately began to give Tarnowsky medical treatment until a Darien EMS-Post 53 ambulance crew arrived. He was taken to Stamford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

Tarnowsky had been contracted to clean the windows of the building, the farthest of two new buildings which sit just to the east of St. John Roman Catholic Church.

The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is still investigating the death, and no further information is being released at this time.

Tarnowsky’s wake is scheduled for 3 to 7 p.m. today, Monday, July 1. Interment will be private.

“Mr. Tarnowsky owned and operated a window cleaning service for many years in Darien,” the announcement said. “The men and women of the Darien Police Department would like to extend condolences to the Tarnowsky Family.”
