The Rev. Frank Hoffmann announced Monday that, starting Sept. 1, he will be succeeded as pastor of St. John Roman Catholic Church in Darien by Monsignor Tom Powers, the vicar general of the Diocese of Bridgeport.

“I am filled with joy to announce to you that the new pastor of St. John Church will be Monsignor Tom Powers,” Hoffman wrote in an announcement emailed to parishioners on Monday.

“I can honestly say that, if I actually got to decide, he would be my first choice. He is a wonderful man and a wonderful priest and will be a wonderful pastor for St. John Church.”

Monsignor Tom Powers will become pastor of St. John Roman Catholic Church in Darien on Sept. 1.

Powers will continue to serve as vicar general, officially the chief administrative deputy to the bishop for administration of a diocese. The Diocese of Bridgeport covers Fairfield County.

“I’m very grateful for the appointment, and also very grateful to Father Fank Hoffmann, the pastor now, for his friendship and his help and guidance over the past few days and weeks,” Powers said in a video message to the parish. (You can watch the video below.)

In addition to being vicar general, Powers has been chaplain at Trinity Catholic High School in Stamford. He worked for a decade in Rome, at the Office of Bishops, Hoffman said.

Dear Parish Family,
I am filled with joy to announce to you that the new pastor of St. John Church will be Monsignor Tom Powers. I can honestly say that, if I actually got to decide, he would be my first choice. He is a wonderful man and a wonderful priest and will be a wonderful  pastor for St. John Church.
Msgr. worked for a number of years nearby at Trinity Catholic High School in Stamford as chaplain and was greatly loved by the students and faculty there. He spent 10 years working in the Office of Bishops in Rome before returning to take the position of vicar general in our diocese under Bishop Caggiano. Msgr. Powers will continue to be the vicar general. He will begin his assignment here as pastor on Sept. 1.
