Marcelle Lambert Dunphy, a long-time resident of Darien, passed away quietly at home on October 4, 2016 at the age of 96.

Marcelle Dunphy passed away Tuesday, Oct. 4. Her wake is Wednesday, and her funeral will be on Thursday.

Marcelle was born on Jan. 7, 1920 in West Somerville, Mass., where she spent her youth and young adulthood. She began working as bilingual secretary to the President of Dewey & Almy Chemical Company, the inventors of synthetic rubber, in Cambridge, Mass. during World War II.

During the war years, she met Leo J. Dunphy of South Boston and the two were married on Sept. 18, 1945. After many years living and traveling in both the United States and abroad for Leo’s job as vice president of franchise operations for Philco-Ford, they settled permanently in Darien in 1969.

Marcelle was active in the Darien Community Association for many years as well as in St. John Roman Catholic Church. She always loved traveling, gardening, reading and spending time with her extended family, and was always willing to lend a smile and helping hand to anyone in need.

Marcelle was predeceased by her beloved husband, Leo, in May 1985 and by her brothers, Henri in 1986 and Anthony Lambert in 2005. She is survived by her adored only daughter, Kathleen Dunphy, and her beloved son-in-law, Ted Markowitz, also of Darien. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews and many friends.

The family will receive condolence calls at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home in Darien, 2119 Boston Post Road, from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 6 at St. John Roman Catholic Church, 1986 Boston Post Road, Darien. Burial will be private at Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree, Mass, the next day.
