Darien Library has announced that a parking lot at the far end of Thorndal Circle, a nearby street off the Post Road, is available for library patrons if the regular library lot gets filled up.

You can park there, but don’t park here

Library Parking Here Not There

A car parked in front of the library. That car’s driver may not know it, but cars frequently swerve from the right lane, honking horns, right at this spot.

Parking on the Post Road, in front of the library, is technically illegal and somewhat dangerous, although the Darien Police Department is waiting for the state Department of Transportation to put up “No Parking” signs before enforcing that ban.

The Darien Police Commission, which is the town’s official traffic authority, arranged with the state Department of Transportation, which controls state roads through town, to ban parking in front of the library on the Post Road. But it can take the DOT a while to install the signs, and Darien police officials don’t want to enforce the no-parking policy until drivers have had enough notice.

Even for a little while after the signs go up, drivers can expect warnings from police rather than tickets, said Police Chief Duane Lovello.

No Parking St. John Church

“No Parking Any Time” sign now up in front of St. John Church. Expect something like this in front of Darien Library.

“We get a fair amount of accidents” in front of the library, Lovello told the Police Commission at a recent meeting, “but a lot of near misses.”

At some times, police may allow parking in front of the library, if a police officer is present “to monitor and maintain safety,” Lovello said.

The library, as recently as this July 7 tweet, was still telling patrons they could park in the front, along the Post Road.

Parking is actually banned all along the stretch of the Post Road from its intersection with Ledge Road, just on the other side of the Interstate 95 overpass, to Quaker Lane, a small street across the Post Road from the baseball field.

Farther west on the Post Road, parking in front of St. John Church has been banned and the signs went up this spring.

Instead, park here when the library lot gets filled up

Thorndal MapThe library has announced on its website the availability of the parking lot (with a path to the library parking lot) on Thorndal Circle:

Ever found yourself circling the parking lot searching endlessly for an open spot? Well – look no further!

Extra parking for the Library can be found at the end of Thorndal Circle, which is the road beside Nielsen’s Florist. Simply exit our parking lot and return to the Post Road, turn left onto Thorndal Circle, and you’re there!

When driving down Thorndal Circle, a large parking lot will be on the left side of the road. There is a walkway that leads to the back corner of the Library’s parking lot.

We’ll see you in the stacks!

Another place not to park is in the lot for Police Headquarters, 25 Hecker Ave., at the far side of the library parking lot. Police recently tweeted a request for drivers to avoid that lot.
