John T. (Jack) Whitehead, a member of the Representative Town Meeting and a life-long resident of Darien, passed away on Sunday, June 26, at Norwalk Hospital.

He had been a member of the Darien Republican Town Committee and worked at the Darien Parks & Recreation Department.

Born on March 21, 1952 in Stamford, he was the son of the late James T. and Mary Catherine Callahan Whitehead. He was 64.

Jack graduated from Stamford Catholic High School in Stamford. He received an A.S. degree from Norwalk Community College, Norwalk; a B.S. degree from Springfield College in Springfield, MA and attended the Master’s Program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA.

In addition to being a long-time employee of the Darien Parks and Recreation Department, Jack also was a special police officer with the Darien Police Department from 1988 to 1996. He was active in the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) and the Greater Norwalk Credit Union.

One of the things Jack was most proud of was the work he did in rebuilding the gazebo at Cherry Lawn Park. It allowed him to demonstrate his creativity and craftsmanship and showed just how much he valued his community in an enduring way.

Jack is survived by a sister, Mary K. Whitehead and a brother, James J. Whitehead. He is also survived by two nephews, a niece, four grandnieces and nephews and several cousins. Also surviving is a close friend, Megan Lambert.

The family will receive friends at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 from 4 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John Roman Catholic Church, 1986 Post Road, Darien on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery, Darien.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Community Fund of Darien, 30 Old King’s Highway, South, Darien, CT 06820.
