Jack Wells Smith, 84, of Dunwoody, Ga., a former Darien resident, passed away peacefully on June 13.

Jack was born in Omaha, Neb. on Aug. 31, 1931 to Herbert and Sue Wells Smith and grew up in in Dallas, Tex., Memphis, Tenn. and Canton, Miss. In his youth, Jack achieved Eagle Scout status.
He graduated with a degree in Architecture from M.I.T. in Boston, MA and belonged to several social clubs including general manager of the M.I.T. Music Club and the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.
After graduation, Jack became a second lieutenant in the Air Force, serving in Colorado Springs, Colo. and Bitburg, Germany. He left with the rank of captain.

He then began his career as an architect and was a vice president with Caudill, Rowlett, Scott while living in Darien and Houston. Jack worked on large projects including schools and hospitals both in America and abroad (Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, and Qatar). He also worked for Reynolds Smith & Hills in Jacksonville, Fl. and Stevens & Wilkinson in Atlanta.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joyce Poppy Smith; daughters, Kimberly Smith Ferguson and Laurie Smith Long; son-in-law, Earl Long and granddaughters, Emily and Hannah Ferguson and Trisha and Katie Long. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Paul.
Jack was involved with his church, volunteered at St. Joseph’s Hospital and with Friends of the Dunwoody Library.
