Frank Mott Johnson, 92, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 4, 2023, surrounded by his family.
Frank was born in Long Branch, New Jersey, on Oct. 26, 1931, the son of Garrett and Marjorie (Cass) Johnson. Growing up on the coast instilled a lifelong love for the ocean that he carried throughout his life.
After 9th grade, Frank moved to Washington, D.C., and graduated from high school in 1949. In 1953, Frank earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Rutgers University.
He then proudly served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, testing guided missiles, until 1956. He went on to work for several companies as a sales engineer and manager, selling large capital equipment to major industrial corporations.
Frank lived with his family in New Jersey until 1978 when they moved to Southport. He remained a Connecticut resident until he moved to Massachusetts to be near his children in 2020.
After retiring in 1999, Frank demonstrated how one person can impact the world by investing in those around them. He was a docent at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich, a guide at the Norwalk Maritime Museum and a volunteer at the local visitor’s bureau.
He loved the Christmas season and enjoyed ringing the Salvation Army kettle bell, offering his warm smile to all. Frank served as president of the Darien’s Senior Men’s Association and was an active member of St. Luke’s Parish — especially enjoying serving at the weekly community supper.
He enjoyed many hobbies, but excelled at bridge, painting, model building, and writing poetry. He was a phenomenal storyteller with a keen sense of timing.
Frank will be forever remembered as a man of integrity with intelligence, a joyful presence, and a strong faith — known for his love of God and love of family.
His legacy will live on in his children and their families: Pamela Johnson Curran of Acton, Massachusetts; Garrett Johnson of Brewster, Massachusetts; and Christopher and Heather Johnson of Sudbury, Massachusetts. He was loved and adored by his six grandchildren: Katherine, Meghan, Matthew, Connor, Caitlin and Tyler.
A celebration of Frank’s life is planned. Donations in his memory can be made to Minuteman Arc for Human Services, 35 Forest Ridge Road, Concord, MA 01742.
