Susan Smith Russell, age 81, passed away peacefully on Dec. 3 at her residence in Haddonfield, New Jersey.

Susan Russell, 81, passed away Dec. 3. Her funeral was held Saturday.
Born Feb. 15, 1942, in Wheeling, West Virginia, Susan graduated from Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Illinois, and received her undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona in elementary education, where she was also a Pi Beta Phi.
She taught second grade for several years, until she married her high school sweetheart. After the birth of their children in Glenview, Illinois, the Russells moved to Darien, where they raised their family, which included her many beloved labrador retrievers.
Susan was an active member of St. Thomas More Parish, an avid golfer at the Country Club of Darien, and a talented painter, weaver and knitter. Susan also cherished spending time each summer with her family at their home on Hummock Pond, in Nantucket.
After living in Connecticut and Massachusetts for 46 years, Susan moved to Haddonfield in 2020 to be closer to her daughter’s family.
Susan was predeceased by her wonderful husband, Robert (Bob) K. Russell Sr. and her beautiful sister, Lynne Smith Miano. She is lovingly survived by her children: R.K. Russell, Jr. of Nantucket and Emily (Patrick) Askin of Haddon Heights, New Jersey, as well as her beloved granddaughters, Annita and Bridget Askin. Susan was attentively cared for in her final years by Diana Togah, to whom her children will be eternally grateful.
Susan’s Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, Dec. 9, at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Darien. The recording of her Funeral Mass can be viewed here. In lieu of flowers, contributions to St Thomas More Parish and the Weill Cornell Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic in Susan’s name will be greatly appreciated.
