A 55-year-old man driving at twice the legal blood-alcohol limit crashed into two other vehicles on Hollow Tree Ridge Road, near Red Cedar Drive, Darien police said.

Police described the events with this account (including accusations not proven in court):

Shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, George Collazo, a resident of Wright Street in Stamford, was driving a gold 2000 Acura north on Hollow Tree Ridge Road when his vehicle veered into the southbound-traffic lane and sideswiped a car coming from the opposite direction. That vehicle was driven by a 54-year-old Trumbull man.

Collazo’s car then returned to the right lane and hit a vehicle pulling out of Red Cedar Drive. That vehicle was driven by a 44-year-old woman. Collazo was the only one of the three drivers who complained of injuries. There were no passengers in any of the three vehciles.

When police arrived, Collazo said he had drunk half a bottle of wine and one beer and was on more than one medication. He took field sobriety tests on the scene and could not do them.

He was asked if he had sustained any injuries but didn’t complain of any. When he was put in the back seat of a patrol car, he began to be agitated and emotional and complained of chest pain. His handcuffs were then removed, and a Darien EMS-Post 53 ambulance took him to Stamford Hospital.

Three days later, on Tuesday, May 17, police applied for and were granted a search warrant for Collazo’s medical records. On May 2, police received a report from the state toxicology laboratory that Collazo’s blood-alcohol level was 0.16 — twice the legal limit — at the time Collazo was admitted to the hospital.

Police obtained an arrest warrant charging Collazo with driving while under the influence of alcohol and failure to drive right. After police told Collazo they had it, he turned himself in on May 31 and was released on $260 bond. He was scheduled to appear today, June 6, in state Superior Court in Stamford.
