"Darien 127," the Darien police boat, was bought in 2016 and in the water for its first full boating season last year. The boat is much more capable than the one it replaced, Mulcahy told the Police Commission.

When two people in a boat in Long Island Sound waved a red flag to get help last Saturday, Darien and Stamford police and fire boats went looking for them. The Darien boats found the pair and took them to West Beach in Stamford.

Darien police gave this account of the incident, much of which was handled by Stamford police:

Initially, police were told just before 10 a.m. that the boat was off of Long Neck Point, but it was found off of Stamford’s Westcott Cove, not far from Darien. (Out on Long Island Sound, whichever municipal police or fire boat is closest to people in distress takes care of the matter — once on shore, that situation can change, as happened in this case.)

The Darien Police Marine Division, in its new boat, arrived at the scene at the same time as the Noroton Fire Department’s vessel, which took the boaters to West Beach at the edge of Westcott Cove in Stamford, where Stamford police handled the matter.
