A very successful Spring Sports Saturday capped off a solid week for Greens Farms Academy’s sports teams with Darien last week.

Here’s a look at what happened and how players from Darien (in boldface) performed:

TRACK AND FIELD

Kristiana Modzelewski (Westport) became Greens Farms Academy’s first-ever FAA track and field champion, taking first place in the 300 hurdles to lead the Dragons effort at The Masters School on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Modzelewski was clocked in 51.73 seconds, earning first place and the league championship. The senior also finished second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.77 seconds.

Will McCall (Westport), another senior, earned a second-place finish in the boys 1,500-meter run. His time was 4:32.82—a new school record.

Another school record fell on the girls side as Haley Nilsson (Fairfield) bettered her 1,500-meter run mark with a 5:15.75 time, good for a fifth-place finish.

Tim Northrop (Fairfield) placed third in the high jump (5-6) while Darien’s Larson Palmgren (1500-4:36.91), Bridgeport’s Ethan Phan (triple jump, 36-4 ½) and Darien’s Ryan Howard (Discus-64 feet) all placed fifth.

For the girls, freshman Madison Gordon (Stratford) was fourth in the long jump (14-4 ½) and sixth in the 100 hurdles (19.64).

GFA placed fifth in both the boys and girls meets. They scored 25 points on the girls side and 20 on the boys.

BASEBALL

Noah Kanfer (Westport) earned the complete-game win, striking out eight and giving up just five hits as GFA bested South Kent by a 6-1 score on Saturday.

Ian Brown (Darien) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Charlie Yates (Fairfield) had a double and drove in two runs. Jason Hernandez (Stratford) also had a hit and scored twice.

The Dragons lost a heartbreaker to Rye Country Day by a 3-2 score on Friday.

Brown had two hits for GFA while Charlie Lafreniere (Norwalk) was 1-for-3 with a triple, which plated both runs.

Sean Hogan (Westport) was 1-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs as GFA fell to King on Tuesday. Brown also had an RBI hit for the Dragons.

BOYS GOLF

Eli Kennon’s (Greenwich) 38 led the way as Greens Farms Academy posted a 7-2 win over the Masters School at Birchwood Golf Club on Monday.

Ian Epps (Southport) shot a 49, Teddy Brown (Greenwich) a 50 and Sam Smith (Darien) and Giani Panariello (Westport) had 52s for the Dragons. Liam Foley (Southport) followed up with a 53.

GFA won the team score, too, 241-254.

Kennon’s 36 gave him medalist honors for the third straight match as GFA went 1-2 in a four-team match on Wednesday.

The Dragons bested Hopkins 6-3 while falling to Rye 6-3 and St. Luke’s 6.5-2.5.

Piero Panariello followed with a 40 while Giani Panariello (Westport) shot a 41 for the Dragons. Will Paliotta (Westport) added a 44 and Brown had a 51.

BOYS LACROSSE

The Dragons battled Rye Country Day to the very end before falling by an 10-8 score on Monday.

Liam Murphy (Westport) scored thrice for the Dragons while Charlie Benson (Darien) added a pair of goals and two assists.

Westport’s Henry McDonald (1 assist), Wilton’s Zach Liston and Darien’s Kyle Haas added solo tallies for GFA.

Goalie Jack Grills (Darien) had seven saves.

GFA won the face-off battle 14-8.

Benson and Mcdonald scored twice each but the Dragons were defeated by Cheshire Academy on Wednesday.

Ryan Pilkinton (Weston) and Liston added single goals for GFA. Murphy, Mcdonald and Haas had assists.

Grills made three saves for the Dragons.

A balanced scoring attack helped lead GFA to a 21-0 win over South Kent on Saturday, snapping its two-game losing streak.

Liston (2 assists) and Darien’s Will Magrone (1 assist) scored three goals each to lead the Dragons. Darien’s Thomas Edwards (2 assists), Miles Mcdonald (Westport), David Hoffman (Westport) and Seb Bodian (Greenwich) had two goals apiece.

Single goals were netted by Henry Mcdonald (2 assists), Murphy (2 assists), Pilkinton (2 assists), Haas (1 assist), Adler Viton (Greenwich), Aidan Murphy (Darien), Grant Miller (Darien) and Grills. Kevin Kuryra (Darien) added an assist.

GIRLS LACROSSE

The GFA girls lacrosse team made the long trip to Millbrook on Wednesday, coming away with an 8-8 tie.

Ella Murphy (Darien) scored three goals from the Dragons while Laci Raveis (Fairfield) added two more. Marygrace Dellisanti (Wilton), Sarah Peltier (Stamford) and Stephanie Wistreich (Wilton) added single goals with Wistreich adding an assist.

Kelly van Hoesen (Greenwich) made six saves in the game.

After losing to Sacred Heart Greenwich by a 17-8 score, the Dragons bounced back to beat Rye Country Day in overtime on Saturday. Murphy’s goal in overtime gave the Dragons the win.

It was Murphy’s fourth goal of the game, matching the total of Wistreich who also netted four tallies. Wistreich also had two assists while Peltier also set up a tally. Van Hoesen had 10 saves for the Dragons, who improved to 6-2-1.

GIRLS TENNIS

Lane Durkin (Darien) and Allie Agnew (Westport) both went to tie breakers to pull out wins and lead GFA past Hamden Hall by a 7-0 score.

Durkin won her match 6-4, 3-6 (8-6) while Agnew won 4-6, 6-2 (14-12).

Other singles winners for GFA were Ryan Boyle (Southport), who remained undefeated this season with a 6-3, 6-1 win, and Dasha Timasheva (Greenwich), who won 6-1, 6-3.

The doubles teams of Anya Bettegowda (Wilton) and Annabel Brawn (New Canaan), Michelle Fedotova (Greenwich) and Ava Ewing (Darien), Nikki Greenberg (Westport) and Margot Goldsmith (Darien) all won, giving up just three games total.

After losing 7-0 to Greenwich Academy, GFA improved to 7-3 on the season by eking out a 4-3 win over Miss Porter’s School.

The Dragons doubles team swept the day to backbone the victory.

Bettegowda and Brawn won 6-1, 6-0; Lane Murphy (Darien) and Harriet Wells (Westport) won 6-0, 6-1; and Fedatova and Ewing posted a 6-1, 6-0 win.

Timasheva took the long singles point with a 6-4, 6-4 win. The Dragons are now 7-3 on the season.
