Darien’s athletic First Selectman Jayme Stevenson will be climbing the walls in Stamford in October — or really one wall, and she’ll be climbing down it from the outside.

Stevenson has announced that she’ll be rappelling down Landmark Tower in Stamford as part of “The Shatterproof Challenge,” a fundraising effort against substance abuse addiction.

“Addiction is preventable and treatable,” Stevenson wrote on a Web page on the Support.Shatterproof.com website. “In the United States alone, alcohol and other drugs claim more than 135,000 lives every year — 370 people every day including our children.

“I accepted the challenge to rappel down Landmark Square on Saturday, Oct. 10 to make an impact on the prevention, treatment, and recovery of this disease.

“Please support my challenge by making a donation to my fundraising efforts today. Together, we can save lives!”

Shatterproof describes itself as “a national organization committed to protecting our children from addiction to alcohol or other drugs and ending the stigma and suffering of those affected by this disease.”

Rappelling events are one of the ways the organization raises money and publicizes its cause.

The national organization is headquartered in Norwalk. Holly Jesperson of Darien, who formerly worked with the Darien Community Association, is communications manager for the organization.
