The Center Street North Parking Lot, at least the town-owned part of it, will get its curbs and catch basins repaired, lights replaced and repaving — starting yesterday, April 3 and continuing through May 12, courtesy of the Darien Department of Public Works.

The town government recently buried the announcement about it on a back page of its website.

The town-owned part of the Center Street North Parking Lot has parking all around it. Just look at those empty spots near the railroad tracks at the top of the picture. Farther to walk? It’s good for your health, ask the Health Department.

Parking is banned from the area under construction as indicated by signs while the work is going on. The work will take place in phases, so part of the area can still be used. The whole parking lot will be unavailable for two days at some point while it’s being repaved.

There are plenty of alternatives to parking in the area where the work is going on: There’s the Center Street South Parking Lot, on the other side of that road. There are also parking spaces marked on Old Kings Highway South and along the railroad tracks on Tokeneke Road — tickets won’t be given out at those spots on days when any part of the parking lot is out of bounds for parking.

Work will be performed between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Before paving starts, work will be done to prepare the lot, and the driving surface will be gravel for a while.

The Department of Public Works announcement

Please avoid this parking area if possible during these times or use extra caution if you use the parking area during these dates. Your vehicle will be towed if parked in an area specifically marked as closed during the dates and times above.

The April 3/May 12  schedule may be lengthened if there’s too much bad weather. You can call the Department of Public Works at 656-7346 if you have any questions.
