Eleanor L. Martin, age 85, most recently of Darien, CT, formerly of Marco Island, FL, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 2015, in Stamford Hospital with her loving family by her side. Born in Brooklyn, New York, February 14, 1930, she was the daughter of the late George H. and Elisabeth Ludecke Kronshage. She was the wife of the late Edward W. Martin. Eleanor is survived by two sons, Edward W. Martin of Los Angeles, CA, and John M. Martin of Austin, TX; two daughters, Jeanne Casciari and her husband, Dino, of Darien, CT; Ellen Taratus and her husband, Ken, of Atlanta, GA; five grandchildren, K.T. Taratus, Christopher Taratus, Matthew Taratus, Nicholas Casciari, and Elizabeth Casciari. All services will be private.

Christopher Adam Blackman, 37, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2015 in the comfort of his home surrounded by family after a courageous battle with cancer. Chris was born on July 21, 1978 to John N. Blackman Jr. and Kathleen Cross Blackman, formerly of Darien, Conn., the first of three siblings. He grew up in Darien and attended Darien High School, where he excelled as a student and enjoyed playing on the Blue Wave football team. After graduating DHS in 1996, Chris attended Hamilton College, where he also played football and received a Bachelor of Arts in history in 2000. He subsequently received a degree from Quinnipiac University School of Law in 2003.

Linnea Mary Prudence Larson Westlake was born on May 16, 1917, in Kodaikanal, India, the youngest of five children of Lutheran missionaries, the Rev. Oscar Leonard and Lilie Liliedahl Larson. Linnea passed from this life on July 27, 2015. The years in India made a lasting impression on young Linnea. She remembered traveling with her father to nearby villages where he taught and preached; she recalled occasionally living on a houseboat; and it was in India that she developed her lifelong love of nature. She treasured these vivid memories her entire life.

Mr. Cooling retired in 2003 as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the publicly listed Panamerican Beverages (now Coca-Cola FEMSA), the largest soft drink bottler in Latin America and the largest international bottler of The Coca-Cola Company.

Keith Barker, a longtime resident of Darien, passed away on Monday, July 20, 2015 at Stamford Hospital. Born on September 28, 1950 in Stamford, he was the son of the late Lawrence C. Barker and Ann Zangrillo Sherwood. Keith graduated from the University of Rhode Island and was a 35-year owner of The Gardener’s Center and Florist. To know everything about Keith, you just need to visit the Gardener’s Center. He was a member of the Wilson Point Yacht Club, the Darien Boat Club and the Darien Chamber of Commerce.

It is with sadness that the Department informs you of the passing of retired Darien Police Lieutenant James Winn.  Jim passed away just before noon today at the Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla, NY after a long period of medical struggles.  He was 73 years old. Jim, or “Pat” to many of his friends, was born in Stamford on Oct. 24, 1941, a son of the late James O. Winn and Elizabeth Winn.  A standout athlete, Jim received numerous awards throughout high school for achievements in baseball, football, track, and swimming. Jim was a member of the 1957 Stamford Police Babe Ruth team, a team that won the Connecticut State Championship, the New England States Championship, and the Regional Championship.  The team then traveled to Ann Arbor, Michigan where they lost the World Championship to Pensacola, Florida.  As a member of this team, Jim pitched a no-hitter.

Ethel Pastuszak, a lifelong resident of Darien, passed away on Friday July 17 at Wilton Meadows, Wilton, CT. She was born August 31, 1920 in Darien to the late William and Lillian Dance. Ethel attended Darien schools and lived in Darien most of her life. In 1950 she and her husband Bill moved into the house Bill built to raise their family. As a senior, she enjoyed going to the Darien Senior Center and crocheting many afghans giving them out as gifts.

She was the cherished daughter of the late Souren Terzian and Seran Terzian (née Zakarian), and beloved wife of the late Salvatore Richard Nepola, DDS, all formerly of Darien. She was a devoted mother and gracious homemaker. Dorothy attended Darien public schools. She received a B.S. in Music at Ithaca College, served as president of music sorority Sigma Alpha Iota, then taught music to disabled children in Buffalo, NY.

Joan Darcy Sorgi, a 25-year resident of Darien, passed away on July 8, 2015, after an admirable battle with cancer. Born in the Bronx, Joan was the daughter of the late Donald and Geraldine Darcy, and the sister of the late Dwight Darcy. She was 62 years old. Joan attended the Academy of Mount St. Ursula in the Bronx, and later graduated from Iona College in 1974.

Stephen Pierson, 83, of Riverside, beloved husband of Nancy Pierson, passed away on July 7, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in New York City on Oct. 18, 1931, he was the son of the late Dr. Richard Norris Pierson and Dorothy Frances Stewart Pierson of New York City and Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.

Stephen matriculated through The Buckley School in New York City and Millbrook School in Millbrook, N.Y.  He attended Colgate University and pursued an accelerated program, achieving a political science degree after three years of study in 1953. Thereafter, he served in the United States Army in the Signal Corps during the Korean War and was posted to the Philippines. After discharge, he attended
Columbia Law School in New York City and graduated in 1958.

Stephen F. Zangrillo, 91, who founded the Darien Sport Shop, died Wednesday, July 8, the Darien Times reported. He was born Dec. 26, 1923. Zangrillo opened the store in 1946, just down the street from its current location. The original store had one room and just 400 square feet of space, said his daughter, Gina Zangrillo (now president of the store) in a video on the store’s website.

John Stuart Sunden passed away on June 13, 2015, at the age of 67 with his family by his side. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 15, 1947. He was the second child of Stuart and Ada Sunden. John was a lifelong resident of Darien and a graduate of Darien High in 1966. He married Rosemarie Ann Sunden in July of 1972.
