William Robert Golden, Jr. of Darien, Connecticut died in the company of his beloved family on Wednesday, Oct. 21. He was born on Oct. 24, 1946 in Everett, Mass. to William Robert Golden and Edna Hahesy Golden. A proud “Double Eagle,” he graduated from Boston College High School in 1964 and Boston College in 1968 before enlisting in the army, where he served for three years.
It is with profound sorrow and a deep sense of loss that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Jean Marie Hessmer, 47, on Oct. 21. Jean was born in Chicago, Ill. on Feb. 29, 1968.
William Baxter Taylor, a 54-year resident of Darien and Rowayton, died peacefully Friday afternoon, Oct. 16, at home. He was 86. Bill, as he was always known, was born in Los Angeles on Nov. 18, 1928 to Matthew Ambrose and Marion Agnes (Baxter) Taylor.
Roberta P. Clarke of Darien passed away Oct. 17, 2015. She was 94. Married to Edward P. Clarke, she had lived in Darien since their wedding 42 years ago. Born in New York City, she was the daughter of Loren Seymour Pfautz of Iowa and Bertha Wimpfheimer Pfautz of Somersworth, NH.
Sue Jean Wong, a longtime resident of Darien, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2015 at Notre Dame Convalescent Home in Norwalk. She was born on Oct. 16, 1929 in Toishan, China. She was the daughter of Guo Ning Chen and Yin Xiu Zhou.

Douglas Gale Wakefield, a resident of Darien since 1976, passed away at Stamford Hospital on Oct. 11, 2015. Doug was born on Sept. 7, 1936 in Norwalk to the late Milford Wakefield and Ruth Gale. He was 79. Doug served with the Darien Police Department for 20 years and retired as a sergeant, after serving four years in the U. S. Marine Corps.

Virginia (Ginny) F. Miller, of Darien passed away peacefully on Oct. 2, 2015 at the age of 82. Ginny was a loving wife, a mother, and a teacher in Connecticut schools. She did extensive volunteer work, investing herself deeply in her community using her time, interests and talents. She began volunteering as a member of the Stamford-Norwalk Junior League, joining after graduation from college.

A remarkable life came to a close on September 22, 2015, as Elizabeth Madeline Kuhnt Lane, age 96, passed away peacefully in Orchard Park, NY, where she resided in an independent living facility. She lived in Darien for decades and was known to her community and many friends as Lee. Lee was born in Bad- Kösen, Germany, a small resort town near Leipzig, on May 26, 1919, and in 1928 immigrated to the United States with her parents, Kurt and Elsa Kuhnt. She lived her formative years in New York City on the Upper East Side and in Greenwich, CT. Following her graduation from Greenwich High School in 1938, she attended Columbia Presbyterian Nursing School in New York City and graduated in 1941.

Howard Alexander Patterson Jr., a 55-year resident of New Canaan, Darien and Norwalk, Conn, died early Wednesday morning, September 30, at Norwalk Hospital. He was 80. Howard was born in New York City on May 17, 1935 to Dr. Howard A. Sr. and Sarah Elizabeth (Robertson) Patterson. He was educated at the Kent School, Kent, Conn. which inducted him into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003; Williams College, Williamstown, Mass.

Joel Easton Mann, 82, a longtime resident of both Darien and New Canaan, CT, passed away Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015 at Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, CT with his loving wife, Barbara, by his side. Joel was born Nov. 16, 1932 to Julius and Fanny (Bomstein) Mann in Bridgeport, CT, the younger of two sons. After graduating from Central High School in Bridgeport, CT in 1949, he attended Union College in Schenectady, NY where he was a member of Kappa Nu Fraternity and graduated in 1953.

Tor Birger Arneberg, an Olympic medalist, avid sportsman and business entrepreneur who served for more than a decade on the board of Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, died Sept. 23 following a lengthy illness. He was 87. A man of tremendous integrity, Mr. Arneberg grew up in Oslo, Norway, where he spent summers sailing the Oslo fjord and winters skiing the country’s glacial slopes. He was a 1950 graduate of Dartmouth College, in Hanover, N.H., where he was captain of the ski team and lauded in a college production as “the man to watch” and “one of the finest skiers on the Dartmouth squad.”
He was the last recipient of the Bradley Plate, awarded to an outstanding athlete in all four skiing disciplines.

Donald McGill Marshman Jr., a 60-year resident of Darien, died early Thursday morning at Stamford Hospital. He was 92. Mr. Marshman was born in Cleveland on Dec. 21, 1922 to Donald M. and Maud Louise (McMurray) Marshman. He was educated at Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass.; Western Reserve Academy, Hudson, Ohio, and graduated from Yale College in the Class of 1945.
Wendy Fisher Karl, 62, a longtime Darien resident, passed away Thursday, Sept. 17, in Vero Beach, Fla. Her obituary from Edward Lawrence Funeral Home (although the obituary says “Wendi”, her page on Facebook says “Wendy” — we changed it to “Wendy” in the headline and sentence above, but we’ll keep the spelling “Wendi” as written in the obituary below):
Wendi Fisher Karl was a graduate of Darien High School and a caring friend to virtually everybody who had the chance to know her. Wendi touched many lives in Darien as a past president of the Kiwanis Club of Darien, long-time member of the Noroton Heights Fire Department’s Women’s Auxiliary, and member of the Darien Boat Club. She worked for many years as a legal assistant for the law firm of Millar & Ambrett.

Born on Jan. 20, 1938 in Stamford, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Josephine (Calvi) Verducci. Nancy was raised in Darien and was a graduate of Darien High School.
