Junior League’s Spring Tag Sale Takes Place 9 AM to 2 PM, Sunday

The Junior League of Stamford-Norwalk Inc. will host its annual spring tag sale on Sunday, April 30, 2017 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the JLSN Headquarters, 748 Post Road, Darien. Early bird shopping will take place from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. for a $10 early entrance fee. JLSN tag sales provide Fairfield County families with great deals on a variety of high quality clothing, accessories, books, toys, sporting goods, small electronics, and more. “Our new members plan tag sales as a team-building activity and a fundraising for the League,” Laura Barbosa, JLSN’s Recruiting Chair, said. “It’s a great time for the community to come out to support our community work and meet some of our newest members.”

All proceeds benefit the Junior League of Stamford-Norwalk.

While Earth Day is celebrated all over the globe, on Saturday and Sunday, April 22 and April 23 there will also be festivities a little closer to home. There’s an Earth Day celebration at Cherry Lawn Park on Saturday, and on Sunday afternoon, Darien Library holds its “All Things Green” festival. Online registration is still open for the Connecticut Food Bank 2017 Walk Against Hunger, set for 1 p.m., Sunday, April 23,  at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven, rain or shine. (Editor’s note: And it looks like no rain, some shine: partly cloudy, with a high of 61.)

On-site registration also will be available the day of the event. To date, more than 350 walkers in more than 70 Walk teams have registered, and you can join one or register separately.  

Walk Against Hunger is a community gathering to increase awareness of the problem of hunger in our communities and to raise funds to support the hunger fighting work of the Connecticut Food Bank. Registration will open at 1 p.m. and the walk will begin at 2 p.m. It will follow a 3.1-mile route through Lighthouse Point Park.

Three thousand eggs will greet little ones at this year’s Annual Mom’s Morning In Easter Egg Hunt on the Darien Community Association’s great lawn, to be held Friday, April 14th (Good Friday) at 10 a.m.

Parents and caregivers are invited to bring toddlers and preschoolers – and their Easter egg baskets of course – to start hunting and gathering at 10 a.m. sharp (the eggs go quickly!). A special appearance by our popular Easter Bunny — who is very happy to pose for photos — will top off this delightful morning activity. Special price of $10 per car; reservations are not required. ‘Sensory-Friendly’ Morning at Maritime Aquarium on Saturday for Those Kids Who Need It

For some, The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk is a place with too many stimuli. So on Saturday, April 1, the aquarium is planning a special morning to give guests with sensory-processing differences a fun, comfortable and accepting environment. During the “Sensory-Friendly Morning,” from 8 a.m. to noon, lights in the aquarium will be lower, and music and other sounds will be turned down or off. The aquarium also will show a specially selected IMAX movie with lower volume and the theater lights less dim. Director of Education Tom Naiman said the aquarium offers occasional “Sensory-Friendly Mornings” to be supportive of children and adults with special needs who may be anxious about visiting.

After 12 memorable seasons together, the Stamford Symphony bids farewell to Eckart Preu at the April 8 and 9 concerts. Performances take place Saturday, April 8 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 9 at 3 p.m. at Stamford’s Palace Theatre. As he always does, Maestro Preu will transport us with music!  This time, to the northernmost point of Europe where we will experience Northern Lights. Additionally, we welcome back pianist, Conrad Tao,who is also an Avery Fisher Career grant winner, composer, curator,and producer! He will perform Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor.

Darien Arts Center students and members of the DAC performance company will present Fiona Goes to Paris, a new original children’s ballet, and the third in the Fiona series, this coming weekend. The ballet will be performed Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2 at noon and 3 p.m. in the DAC Weatherstone Studio at 2 Renshaw Road, behind the Town Hall. Fiona is geared toward a younger audience and all are welcome to attend. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

 

Tickets are $10 for the show, which runs for about an hour. Tickets are available at the door or at darienarts.org.

Focus on French Cinema Film Fest Kicks Off in Stamford, Then a Weekend of Films in Greenwich

The annual Focus on French Cinema film festival, which takes place in a few weeks in Stamford, Greenwich and Manhattan, has notable French directors and actors coming for a visit, along with at least 19 films, many shown in the area for the first time. The festival kicks off with an initial screening at the Avon Theater in Stamford on Monday, March 27, then moves to Manhattan events that Tuesday through Thursday. Starting Friday, the festival offers showings of the films all weekend long at the Bow Tie Cinemas in Greenwich. The festival will have award-winning films not only from France, but Quebec, Switzerland, Belgium and African French-speaking countries — all presented with English subtitles. Celebrated French Director Claude Lelouch will attend the festival as “the Honored Guest.”
