A downtown traffic stop just after 1 p.m. on Saturday (New Year’s Eve) resulted in charges for the driver and the arrest of a man wanted on sexual assault charges by Stonington police.

Darien police described what happened with this account (including accusations not proven in court):

Mahwanga Campbell, 25, of the Bronx, was driving a gray Toyota Camry with dark tinted windows and no front license plate west on the Post Road near its intersection with Day Street when a police officer saw the car and pulled it over.

Campbell gave the officer a false name, and the officer found that there was no record for the license plate on the back of the car. Asked for his real name, Campbell identified himself.

His passenger, Derrick McKenzie, 57, also a Bronx resident (on Mickle Avenue), is wanted by Stonington police on charges of risk of injury to a minor and fourth-degree sexual assault. Darien police had no information on those charges.

Just after 6 p.m. on Saturday, McKenzie was turned over to Stonington police.

Campbell, of Bronxwood Avenue in the Bronx, was charged with possession of less than half an ounce of marijuana (first offense; police had no information about what they found on Campbell or in the car), interfering with a police investigation; failure to display a front license plate, driving an unregistered vehicle and misuse of a license plate.
