A 44-year-old man headed for Boston stopped for coffee at Starbucks late last Thursday night, but while he was on the road, he got an alert saying his credit card had just been used.

That’s when he realized he’d left his wallet at the coffee shop on 815 Post Road when he stopped there at 9:50 p.m., 10 minutes before the shop closed.

  • By 1:11 a.m., a purchase from one of his stolen credit cards had been made at a Gulf gas station on the Major Deegan Expressway in New York state.
  • At 1:45 a.m., the card was used again, this time at CVS in Greenwich to make a $180.95 purchase. A minute later, it was used to make another purchase for the same amount — perhaps to buy gift cards.
  • At 2:08 a.m., the card was used to buy $211.17 for something at CVS on High Ridge Road in Stamford.

The man, a resident of New Jersey, went to Darien Police Headquarters at 6:30 p.m. the next day. The wallet, valued at $10, also contained $440 in cash, the man said, along with his driver’s license.

The lost money and credit card charges amount to $1,013,07.

Police said they were asking to see store video surveillance records.
