A 19-year-old Darien woman forgot to pick up her smartphone from the counter when she bought something at a gas station convenience store late Saturday afternoon, and almost immediately she returned to the counter to get it — too late.
Darien police described what happened with this account:
At about 4:15 p.m., the teenager bought something at the Standard gas station convenience store at 180 Noroton Ave. (at the southeast corner of Noroton and West avenues).
She left the iPhone, valued at $600, on the counter, left the store, discovered she no longer had the phone and returned soon after. By 4:41 p.m., she called police to report the theft.
Neither the clerk nor anyone at the store knew where the phone was. A friend of the woman used the phone’s finder feature, which indicated the phone was in the area of Stillwater Avenue on the West Side in Stamford (the police report didn’t say when the phone was shown to be there).
A store clerk told police that so many people go in and out of the store that the clerk didn’t notice the phone.
Darien police detectives were expected to go through video surveillance records from the store.
