Some thief or thieves went through a lot of trouble to snatch a 1966 Red Ford Mustang GT convertible from the driveway of a Middlesex Road man who had it up against his house and another car parked close behind it.

Sometime overnight from Thursday to Friday, Oct. 13 to 14, someone pried the passenger-side lock cylander out of a door to force entry into the Toyota Camry parked behind the Mustang.

The steering column of the vehicle was tampered with in a way that allowed the car to be moved off the driveway. It was found the next morning on the lawn. Nothing in it was missing.

The Mustang, which had been covered with a cloth, was apparently driven away, although the owner, a resident of the 300 block of Middlesex Road, told police the next morning that he still had the keys and the car had been locked. He had seen the covered car at 10 p.m. the night before, but by 7 a.m., it was gone.

The owner, 54, said he knew of no one who would steal the 50-year-old car. He said he seldom drove the car and only took it out for special occasions. He valued it at $25,000. Detectives scoured the scene for evidence.
