Music, stories, folk art and other crafts related to Hispanic heritage are among the events for children scheduled this month at Darien Library.

Friday, Sept. 8 from 4 to 5 p.m.
Enchanting rhythms and folklore enhance this richly entertaining performance with music ranging from Pre-Columbian instrumentation to Hispanic Nueva Cancion and World Fusion. Most songs are sung in Spanish with English translations. The audience will sing, clap, and dance their way on a journey through the Americas!
Open. Grades K and up.

Registered: Frida Friday
Friday, Sept. 22 from 4 to 5 p.m.
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, join us for a special storytime on Frida Kahlo! Children will hear a story about the Mexican artist and get the opportunity to decorate a craft inspired by lovely Frida herself. Grades K to 2.

Registered: Mexican Tin Art
Tuesday, Sept. 26 from 4 to 4:30 p.m.
In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, learn about the Mexican Folk Art called hojalata, which involves the beautiful and vibrant decoration of tin! Children will learn about this cherished tradition and decorate their own pieces of hojalataGrades 2 to 3.

Surcari
Thursday, Sept. 28 from 4 to 5 p.m.
Learn interactive games and songs in Spanish, based on the musical styles and traditions of the Andes, the Spanish Caribbean, Central and South America, Spain and Mexico. Participants will play with authentic percussion instruments and dance as they explore different carnival traditions. Open. Grades K and up.

ART & STEM

Messy Monday
Monday, September 18th from 4 to 4:30 p.m.
Get messy with the Children’s Librarians and craft the afternoon away. Open. Ages 3 and up.

Open TEA Room: Perler Bead Mazes
Tuesday, September 19th from 4 to 5 p.m.
Come and explore a special topic in STEAM with us! This week’s project will be Perler Bead Mazes. You can design your maze to either be simple or complicated, it is all up to you! Open. Grades 3 to 6.

BOOKS & MORE

Registered: Nutmeg Book Club
Wednesday, September 27th from 6 to 7 p.m.
Each month, we will be reading one of the 2018 Nutmeg Book Award Intermediate Nominees. Be prepared to enjoy delicious pizza, games, and trivia. This month’s book will be: “Book Scavenger” by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman. Grades 4 to 6.

Bookworms
Tuesdays, Sept. 14, 21, and 28 from 4:15 to 4:45 p.m.
Join us for a weekly craft storytime. Read a book, have a discussion, and get crafty! Open. Ages 4 to 7.

Lego Club
Saturdays from 2 to 4 p.m.
Are you a Lego fan? Let’s build something together! Stop by every Saturday to participate in collaborative Lego building with other kids. Open. Ages 5 and up.

Stories by the Sea
Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.
A family storytime for all ages at Darien’s Weed Beach Park. This program is co-sponsored by the Darien Parks and Recreation Department.
Note: Families must have a beach pass to attend this program.

Toddler Tales
Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m.
Walkers (up to 36 months) and a parent/caregiver. This fast-paced storytime for lively toddlers includes books, songs, fingerplays, and movement.
