Police: Mailing a Check for Almost $900 From His Mailbox Proved Risky for Hoyt St Man

A resident of Hoyt Street, between Echo Drive and Briar Brae Road made out a personal check for $896.63 to pay a bill and put the check in an envelope which went into his mailbox for pickup. The check, and eventually the money, went into a thieve’s pocket. The man told Darien police on Nov. 29 that he had mailed or tried to mail the check in late October. A man and two teenage boys, all from Yonkers, were arrested after they stole envelopes from a mailbox at the Darien Post Office on Saturday, police said. Also, a check was found to have been altered after it had been mailed at the same place on the previous Tuesday, police said. Darien police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

Two Checks Altered for a Total of $2,343

On Tuesday, Oct. 23, a man later told police, he had mailed six checks by putting the envelopes in a mailbox at the Post Office on Corbin Drive. His bank later informed him that some of the checks had possibly been cashed fraudulently.

Items Stolen from Three Unlocked Vehicles and a Mailbox, Same Night, Most in Same Area of Town

Along with the normal thefts from unlocked vehicles overnight, 10 thank-y0u cards were taken from a mailbox sometime overnight from Monday to Tuesday, Oct. 8 to 9 — all but one in the same area of town. The thefts, all reported Tuesday morning, occurred on Middlesex Road, Noroton Avenue and Edgerton Street. A locked vehicle in the same driveway as one of the thefts was untouched, police pointed out. Also: Darien police also report that during the past week Darien police responded to 10 motor vehicle accidents, of which three involved minor injuries.
