Many of the Silvermine Guild members in the Summer Salon are from the Northeast region, but the Guild’s membership has expanded geographically over the years, and the exhibition draws from what is now a national roster. Among the exhibiting artists are nine from Darien: Jan Dilenschneider, Rose-Marie Fox, Vickie French Smith, Elizabeth Higgins, Cate Leach, Mary Manning, Lisa Thoren, Meg Tweedy and Karen Vogel.

With Paper 2019, Silvermine Arts Center introduces a new annual exhibition series designed to focus on a particular material and consider it in the broadest terms.

Paper 2019 — on view at Silvermine Galleries from April 3 to May 16 —features prints, drawings, photographs, artists’ books, and handmade paper as well as three-dimensional works made with paper. The public is invited to an opening reception on Sunday, April 7, from 2 to 4 p.m.

“The aim of the exhibition is to highlight the vitality, diversity, sense of experimentation and skillful execution, and the many ways in which contemporary artists approach this material,” said the exhibit curator, Jennifer Farrell, who is also the associate curator of drawings and prints at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Finalists, all of whom are included in the exhibition, were chosen from over 400 submissions from almost every state in the U.S. The geographical spread gives the exhibition a national perspective. “Viewers will find a wide range of works made on or with paper, including sculpture and installations along with the traditional disciplines of drawing, painting, and photography,” said Silvermine Gallery Director Roger Mudre. “We’re delighted to introduce a new exhibition series with a national outlook and reach.”

Visitors to the Silvermine Galleries might be inspired to experience making art with paper themselves after seeing the different and intriguing ways contemporary artists are approaching this traditional material.
