Opus for Person-to-Person Celebrates 20th Year (Always Welcoming More Volunteers)

Opus for Person-to-Person wraps up its 20th year as a volunteer fundraising and out-reach organization by raising record amounts for Person-to-Person and returning to its roots — serving lower Fairfield county. Twenty years ago two women, Katherine Michele and Lee Hulings, felt passionate about how important Person-to-Person was to their community and the clients that they serve every day. Their hope, says Katherine Michele, “was to bring an entirely new audience, full of energy, creativity, professionalism, and a new perspective to Person-to-Person.” The name of the organization — Opus, the Latin word for ‘Great Works’ — resonated with the founders and continues, to this day. As Ms. Michele stated recently, there are “very few agencies where you can do so much good and have immediate, tangible results” for people in need. ____________

OPUS for Person-to-Person raised $85,000 at its annual fall fundraiser, The BigGER Rig Gig, which took place on Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Ox Ridge Hunt Club. The proceeds from the event will fund several programs and initiatives at Person-to-Person, including its emergency assistance program, food pantries and clothing centers. Opus is grateful that Ring’s End and Stamford Hospital were the lead sponsors of its annual fall fundraiser, and that Evolution Air contributed generously to the fundraising event. While guests enjoyed delicious food, live music and lawn games during the outdoor event, the most meaningful part of the evening was a poignant speech delivered by Laila Bravo, a former client of Person-to-Person.

A sea of red balloons will decorate Darien mailboxes on Saturday, May 21st to signify Opus for Person-to-Person’s annual Balloons for Campers Day. This fundraising event supports the Person-to-Person Campership Program, which enables close to 500 Stamford public elementary school students from low-income households to attend summer camps at no cost. For the sixth consecutive year, Houlihan Lawrence, formerly Kelly Associates, will generously sponsor the event, continuing their steadfast support of Opus for Person-to-Person and the community. “We are delighted to continue our tradition of helping children experience a summer full of fulfilling possibility while their parents are able to remain working,” said Jeff Kelly, managing broker of Houlihan Lawrence. Local residents received flyers in a late April mailing asking for support.

If you’re planning a trip to the Darien Toy Box — or you’ll be in the area — we hope you’ll buy and donate a toy for the children of P2P clients. About P2P Holiday “Toy Store”

Every December, Person-to-Person hosts a pop-up Toy Store, where clients “shop” for their children’s holiday presents. Families select a toy and a book for each child, plus a board game for the entire family to enjoy. While the parents shop, children are entertained. Volunteer elves accompany each shopper and wrap each present in festive holiday paper.
