Selectmen Approve New Fee Scale for False Alarms, Send Recommendation to RTM

The first time a property sends out a false fire alarm or burglar alarm, the town fines the alarm owner $100, and in the future, the second fine should be $150 and all future fines within a year of the first alarm should be $250. That’s the Board of Selectmen’s recommendation, decided in a 4-0 vote Monday night, to the Representative Town Meeting. The proposal would increase the second and third fines. Currently, they all stand at $100. Selectmen hope the change in the town fire alarm ordinance will discourage more false alarms, especially from those properties where false alarms have been occurring again and again.

All three Darien volunteer fire departments participated in a statewide day for open houses on Saturday in order to attract volunteers. Kids were also welcome. Not a large number came to the events, held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on a cool, drizzly day when many had beat it out of town for the April school break. Darien Fire Department, with passers-by spotting the open house downtown, had a location advantage over the other two departments and attracted about 100 visitors. There were perhaps a dozen families at the Noroton Fire Department and “a handful” at the Noroton Heights Fire Department, organizers said.

Noroton Fire Dept Invites You to See Its New Fire Engine on Sunday

The Noroton Volunteer Fire Department has put into service a new fire engine, a “pumper” that replaces one bought in 1972, and it invites the public to see it at an open house from noon to 2 p.m. this coming Sunday, Oct. 18. The new vehicle was custom built in Wisconsin after a committee of Darien volunteers came up with specifications and research the purchase by visiting other departments in Fairfield and Westchester counties to see their new fire trucks. “The truck carries 650 gallons of water; 2,000 feet of supply hose from fire hydrant to fire locations and can pump up to 1,500 gallons of water per minute,” according to a news release issued Monday morning by the department. Here’s the full news release:
