Touting his work in getting Stamford on stronger financial footing, New Canaan Republican Michael Handler announced Monday that he’s making a bid for Connecticut’s highest elected office. Handler, 47, filed for a candidate committee for the office of governor July 14 and the state on Tuesday approved his filing, he said. Handler is employed as director of administration for Stamford and serves as director of Emergency Management in New Canaan. In that town, he’s known to thousands of local households as the recorded voice that advises residents about rescue efforts, shelter options, safety precautions and road closures during and after major storms.

He describes himself as a “hands-on” person with background in investments and finance in the private sector who also has “a very strong background in public safety” and the public sector, “having dedicated myself to public office in Stamford for the last five years.”

Middletown Mayor Dan Drew, who’s running for governor, positioned himself as a candidate of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party during a recent visit to Darien. Speaking before the Darien Democratic Town Committee on Thursday, July 13, Drew talked about some of his proposed solutions to the state’s budget woes. Shortfalls in tax revenue, have swollen the state’s potential budget deficit to $1.7 billion. “There’s no silver bullet,” he said. To solve this problem, he recommended legalizing and taxing recreational marijuana, instituting highway tolls, raising the state income tax, and implementing various state and municipal government reforms.

But he cautioned, “We have to do this carefully and intelligently, and we have to consult an awful lot of people.”
