Jeep Stolen Overnight on Bittersweet Lane, Other Vehicles Entered Overnight Two Days Before That

A Jeep Grand Cherokee was stolen overnight last week on Bittersweet Lane, and elsewhere in town, on a different night last week, vehicles were entered overnight, resulting in at least one theft, Darien police said. All the vehicles were unlocked. Police gave this account of the incidents:

The Grand Cherokee was stolen overnight Saturday to Sunday, Aug. 9 to 10. The keys to the vehicle were “possibly inside” it, police said in a news release.

Police: Man, 19, Charged With Motor Vehicle Theft After Police Link His DNA With Evidence in Vehicle

After police collected DNA evidence from an SUV stolen in Darien and left in Hamden, they linked that evidence to a 19-year-old Hamden man and charged him with stealing it, Darien police said. Police gave this account of the case, including accusations not proven in court:

Almost a year ago, on May 27, 2024, a 2021 Audi Q5 was reported stolen from outside a house on Hickory Lane. It had been left unlocked with the keys inside. The vehicle was found in Hamden on June 5, and Darien, Hamden and New Haven police worked together on the investigation. Police didn’t say how they linked the DNA in the vehicle with the DNA of Khalil Council of Hobson Avenue in Hamden.

Ford Bronco Stolen in Darien, Found in Derby, Undamaged

A Hillside Road resident reported the theft of a 2022 Ford Bronco to police at about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 12. But the owner turned out to be lucky that morning. Darien police were informed by Derby police that officers in Derby found the vehicle later the same morning, apparently without damage. Darien police detectives processed the vehicle for evidence, then released it to the owner. Police did not say whether the SUV was stolen overnight or whether it was unlocked.

Thieves Try to Hack a Digital Key in One Car, Attempt Made to Enter Another

Burglars targeted two vehicles in separate incidents in town last week — one on Tuesday on the Post Road, the other on Saturday on Hecker Avenue, Darien police said. Nothing was taken from either vehicle. In the Saturday incident, the thieves seem to have tried to get the car open with technology designed to subvert a “digital key” — an app on a smartphone that’s used instead of a key fob on some cars. “Digital key” technology is relatively new, and thieves have sometimes been able to get it to open car doors. Police gave the following information about the incidents:
