Letter from Walter Casey: Former Post 53 Director and Jayme Stevenson Opposed Putting Paramedics in Town

Editor’s note: Walter Casey, who recently moved from Darien, agitated vociferously for paramedics to be based in town for years before the town government agreed to them, after a town-hired consultant recommended them. His letter here is in response to a letter from former Darien EMS-Post 53 Director Ron Hammer, published this week in the Darien Times, in which he says, in part, “If […] any resident wants to vote based simply on one’s work related to paramedics in town, she [Jayme Stevenson] deserves the credit for that one. No one else.” It should be noted that when the consultants’ recommendation was made, Hammer did not oppose it and said he had not previously opposed it, and Stevenson, as first selectman, had not explicitly opposed them. She also supported having paramedics in town after reading and hearing the consultants’ recommendation:

To the editor:

A newcomer to Darien would not know enough and might actually believe Ron Hammer’s praise of Jayme Stevenson’s efforts to bring paramedics to Darien.

After seven children at the Country Club of Darien complained of symptoms consistent with chlorine exposure on Saturday afternoon, Darien police, firefighters and an ambulance crew were called to the scene. After the call to first responders went out at 2:50 p.m., a group of youths with complaints of the symptoms were quarantined at the club and evaluated by Darien EMS-Post 53 emergency medical technicians. Of seven children, ranging in age from 8 to 16, five were later taken to Stamford Hospital “as a precautionary measure.” Police gave out no further information about their condition, although the implication is that they weren’t in immediate danger. “All of the affected youths were conscious and alert,” police said.

“Ticket presales are a great way for young families to get to the fun faster after the parade.  When you have young children in strollers and your kids are excited to get to the action, it’s hard to wait on line, so why not get right to the fun with your tickets already in hand?” said Gayle Close, co-chair of ticket sales for the Post 53 Food Fair. “A select group of local retailers have kindly allowed us to set up ticket sales outside their stores, so you’ll see Post 53 volunteers all over town in the next few weeks,” Close said. ” We want to thank our retail partners for their tremendous support.”

Tickets will sell for $5.00 each and will be sold by young adult Post 53 members outside locations such as At Home In The Heights, Darien Doughnut, Darien Sport Shop, Dunkin Donuts, Fabricare Cleaners, Heights Pizza, Jake’s Place, Jimmy’s Southside Tavern, Nielsen’s Florist & Garden Shop, Palmer’s Market, Ring’s End, Splash Car Wash, Stop & Shop Good Wives Shopping Center, Stop & Shop, Noroton Heights Shopping Center, Tengda Asian Bistro Darien, The Goose, Vavala’s Deli & Catering at a varying schedule. Ticket sales also give people from town a chance to talk with Post members to learn more about the services provided and get your blood pressure checked.
