How Train Conductors, Bus Drivers Cope with COVID-19 Threat: Cameron on Transportation

“In my 30 years in the transit business I never thought I’d be asking people NOT to take the bus,” says Doug Holcomb, CEO of Greater Bridgeport Transit, the operator of 57 buses carrying 5 million passengers a year. But not this year. Like most transit agencies, GBT is asking people to stay home and to ride their buses only if it is essential. So ridership on those buses has dropped 65%. On Metro-North the ridership is down 90 to 95%.

Board of Ed Chair: Thank You, District Teachers, Administrators and Staff

To the editor:

As a community Darien has proudly committed to the education of our children time and time again. We debate issues, we research new initiatives and techniques, and we talk about metrics, outcomes and mental health, all with the guiding principle that our children are best served to participate in our society when they are healthy, and have a strong educational framework. In this moment in time, when traditional education models have been re-invented, flipped and reimagined, with an immediacy that no one ever imagined, what has become most clear is that it is our human touch — our teachers, administrators, and support staff who truly play a vital and important role in our children’s education. The importance of their daily interactions with our children, can not be underestimated. And the way in which our staff has stepped up to work to meet the needs of our children is to be commended.

Darien Bell Ringing Thank-You Goes from Event to Series: Scheduled for Next Five Saturdays

This past Saturday’s bell-ringing event in Darien is being repeated, the First Selectman’s Office just announced, for the next five Saturdays, through May 16. “Ring Your Bells, Loud and Proud,” the announcement says, during the repeats of Saturday’s five-minute event, where people around town were encouraged to ring a bell, bang a pot or otherwise make a noise for several minutes to give a loud “Thank you!” to healthcare workers and first responders on the frontlines of the COVID-19 battle. As with the event last Saturday, the noise-making is scheduled for five minutes, starting at 7 p.m. The ringing, gonging, honking and yelling takes place rain or shine, right from your own window, door or, as the announcement suggests, “your front lawn or front steps.” “From 7 to 7:05, come stand on your front lawn or front steps and ring cowbells, shake holiday bells, bang a pot and pan or simply clap hands,” the announcement says.

Kids at the India Cultural Center in Greenwich recently raised $1,900 on a GoFundMe page to provide relief supplies to area healthcare workers at Stamford and Greenwich hospitals, along with Greenwich Emergency Medical Service during the COVID-19 crisis. — an announcement from the India Cultural Center

The “India Cultural Center Kids Love You” fund provided drinks and energy snacks for local healthcare providers at both hospitals and at the ambulance service. As medical professionals and first responders continue to work tirelessly providing round the clock care to keep our communities safe, putting their own lives at stake, the kids of ICC knew there was more they could do themselves. “We were thrilled when we heard from a group of ICC kids who wanted to give back to local doctors and nurses,” said Margie French, executive director of ICC. “The fund was entirely driven off of their desire to do more and is proof that kids do great things.”

In between virtual classes and homework, the kids (ranging in age from 5 to 13) carved out time from their day to set up home production lines to assemble care packages.
