State Representative Candidate Randy Klein Gets Public Campaign Financing

Randy Klein has officially received his public financing grant, becoming the first state representative candidate in the 141st District to receive their grant through the CEP in 2016. The 141st State Assembly District represents Darien and Rowayton. “I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone that contributed to my campaign. Since I finished the fundraising for my grant, I have knocked close to 2,000 doors in Darien and Rowayton,” Klein said Thursday. “From the hundreds of conversations I’ve had with members of these communities, it is clear that their concerns are not being addressed in a proactive way by their current representative.”
The CEP was introduced in Connecticut in 2008 by the state as an effort to limit the influence of private interests on state elections.

Letter: Towns Always Had the Legal Burden of Disposing of Unclaimed Corpses

To the editor:

The Darien First Selectman [Jayme Stevenson, a Republican] sent a letter to our legislative delegation expressing her concern regarding “a new financial burden” being placed on towns and municipalities with respect to, “the state shifting the burden for the disposal of unclaimed bodies from the state to cities and towns.”

In her letter, the first selectman calls this action a “new municipal mandate which shifts the burden for the logistics and disposition of unclaimed decedents to municipalities.”

It’s important to set the record straight. This responsibility is not new — it is and has been the responsibility of the local municipalities. The state, however, has historically been performing these duties for cities and towns for years. As Connecticut Mirror reporter Keith Phaneuf states in his May 26 column, “though state law makes cities and towns responsible for final disposition of unclaimed decedents in their jurisdiction, this has not been enforced for years but rather handled by the state.”

Perhaps in good financial times this was something the state could afford to do. Today with bipartisan calls to address the deficit by reigning in spending, this is one service that unfortunately cannot be performed by the state any longer.

Letter in Support of Terrie Wood: ‘Thoughtful Leadership and Respectful Governing’

To the editor:
If you were new to Fairfield County, didn’t follow local politics or have been living under the huge pile of Dan Malloy’s taxes, you might wonder why Terrie Wood normally runs for re-election unopposed or ponder her large margins of victory over opponents when they dare.
What’s clear is that among numerous specifics, what stands out about Terrie is her thoughtful leadership and respectful governing.  In what has become a divisive electorate in our state and nationwide, aren’t those the qualities you would prefer to have represent you in Hartford? Despite the damaging fiscal mess Democrats, who control both legislative chambers and the governor’s office, have left us with, there are still positive attributes to living in Connecticut — and certainly in Darien or Rowayton. Without Terrie’s representation, those positives will continue to disappear along with GE and many other businesses and residents that have left the state because of harmful anti-business policies, record tax increases and Hartford’s desire to use fiscally responsible towns like Darien as their unlimited cash-cow. I have known Terrie for years including working along side her during four years I spent in town government and she has always proven to be a voice of reason that will fight for continued fiscal responsibility and thoughtful legislation that will attract new business and provide necessary social services. I feel fortunate to call Terrie my friend.  I feel safe and exceptionally represented to call her my voice in Hartford.

Letter: Why I Nominated State Rep. Terrie Wood for Re-Election at the GOP Convention

To the editor:
On Monday, May 16, I attended the Republican State House Representative Convention and had the privilege of nominating Terrie Wood for a fifth term as the state representative for District 141, which includes Rowayton and most of Darien. Personally, I was relieved and grateful Terrie was willing to serve as our State Representative for another term, as I have consistently been impressed by her energy, her enthusiasm, her passion for the job, her bipartisan approach to solving problems, and most important, her sincere and never-ending efforts to represent all of her constituents in District 141, regardless of their political affiliation. Always the optimist, Terrie genuinely believes Connecticut’s current fiscal problems can be mitigated and turned around, and she’s willing to commit the time and energy to make this happen. She has the drive and the proven leadership experience we need right now to tackle the many issues we face in our community and in Hartford. We are indeed fortunate to have a candidate who has a sound understanding of the issues that need to be addressed, a clear vision of the work that needs to be accomplished on our behalf, and the ability to achieve meaningful results for all of us in District 141.

Randy Klein Gets Democratic Nomination to Challenge State Rep. Terrie Wood

Randy Klein of Darien accepted the Democratic Party’s nomination Tuesday to represent Connecticut’s 141st Assembly District, comprised of Darien, and the Rowayton neighborhood of Norwalk. “As a small business owner for almost forty years, I know it’s not enough to just talk about problems, you actually have to do something to solve them. As your state representative, I pledge to be a voice for progress for our district, and prioritize those issues which will make Connecticut an attractive place to start a family and grow a business,” Klein said Tuesday. Klein emphasized the importance of building a strong infrastructure that would allow economic growth on both the local, and statewide level in his acceptance speech on Tuesday. “Substantial investments are being made to repair our existing roads and rail, but we need to start identifying ways in which we can build a transportation infrastructure that major corporations and small businesses alike look for when they are deciding where to open their doors,” Klein said.

Letter: Renominated State Rep. Terrie Wood Says Balance Spending Priorities with Fiscal Constraint

To the editor:

I’m pleased to announce that I will be running again for state representative in the 141st District, Darien and Norwalk. Many thanks to Belinda Metzger and Ralph Depanfilis for nominating and seconding me and to the delegates for their support on Monday night. It has been my honor and truly a privilege to be your voice and vote in Hartford. Though Connecticut has many positive attributes — a vibrant and diverse population, good schools, a well-educated workforce, rich cultural opportunities, a historic coastline and scenic landscapes — we face deep fiscal challenges. Since the recession of 2008, we’ve dealt with a cycle of deficits, which have resulted from too much spending, shortfalls in revenue and historic underfunding of pension liabilities.
