You’re invited to join fellow Darien residents on the steps of Darien Town Hall, 2 Renshaw Road, before the Board of Selectmen meeting at 7 p.m. to stand in solidarity with the goal of flying the Pride Flag at Town Hall.

The rally is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.

Immediately following the rally, protestors hope to fill Room 206 with supporters. That’s the room where the Board of Selectmen is scheduled to meet, starting at 7 p.m.

The LGBTQ+ Pride Flag is also known as the Rainbow Flag.

Organizers of the demonstration will ask the board to vote “yes” to fly the flag for the rest of the month of June, which is LGBTQ+ Pride Month.

Organizers are asking those who attend to speak to the board during the meeting’s public comment period.

Organizer’s Arguments for the Town Flying the Flag

Here’s an excerpt from a news release sent by Randy Klein, one of the organizers of the demonstration:

• In Darien, the Pride Flag flew at Town Hall for two years in 2021 and 2022, in support of the LBGTQ+ community.

• Greenwich, Fairfield and Westport, all Republican-led towns, are flying the Pride Flag this month.

• Bridgeport, Weston, Ridgefield, Easton, Norwalk and Stamford are also flying the Pride flag to show support for the LGBTQ+ community.

• Darien is one of only a couple of towns in Fairfield County which is not flying the Pride Flag.

• The Darien Board of Selectmen’s reversal on flying the Pride Flag indicates the town of Darien has turned against the community for which it should stand. It is not a neutral act. This decision reflects the poorly on the Darien community. And most importantly shows a lack of support for our youth.”

• At a time when the LGBTQ+ community is under attack all across the United States, we need to show our support more than ever before.
