A Dec. 13 announcement from Darien police about a spate of bomb threats emailed around the country had a local connection the same day as the announcement — a bomb threat emailed to a local business.

At 1:36 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, police received a report of a bomb threat emailed to Sipsters wine shop at 1053 Post Road.

The email said that an explosive device had been hidden in the store, and unless the store transferred $20,000 in bitcoin currency to an account, the bomb would blow up.

Police said the threat wasn’t credible. No bomb went off. No payment was made.

Here’s part of the advice police gave in the Dec. 13 announcement:

  • This has been determined to be a hoax and does not appear to be a credible threat. Residents and business owners are advised to use all normal precautions and to contact the Darien Police Department should you receive some type of “threat.” […]
  • Today’s email “threat” involved the sender demanding Bitcoin payment in order to prevent detonation of the alleged “bomb.”
  • DO NOT arrange for Bitcoin or any other form of payment in response to receiving this “threat.”
