Peter Haaren of Keene, New Hampshire passed peacefully at the age of 96 on March 8, 2024 at 11:33 a.m.
He was surrounded with the love of his family, caregivers at Langdon Place Rehab and the hospice staff of Home healthcare, hospice and community services (HCS) of Keene.
Peter was married and devoted to his now deceased wife of almost 70 years, Sarah Bernart Haaren, in 1953.
Peter was a devoted husband, father, son and brother. He was beloved by many and known for his fierce independence, kindness, and love of the great outdoors. He was civic minded, serving as a selectman in Mount Holly, Vermont and as an EMT on the Rescue Squad with his wife Sally, in Mount Holly. He was an avid skier, sailor, a passionate outdoorsman and most notably, a dedicated golfer into his 95th year!
He was born in New York City and moved with his family to Darien, Connecticut as a young boy. He attended the Hotchkiss School class of 1945 and he served in the Merchant Marines for two years, then attended Princeton University class of 1950 and attended New York University for his Masters in Business Administration.
Peter worked for Pan American Airlines, Great Northern Paper company, and Virginia Fibre as a financial administrator. In 1977 he and Sally moved to Vermont and he worked with the First Vermont Bank and then as an investment counselor with Ed Taylor Investments.
Peter is survived by his three children: Peter, Tyler and David and their spouses respectively: Karen, Daniel and Kathy; his two grandchildren, Sabina and Tal; and an extended family of nieces and nephews, including his sister’s children, Lisa and Greg.
Peter Haaren was the son of Ernest Charles Haaren and Helen Dorothy Tiedeman and brother to Joan Haaren Wolfe, all deceased.

A remembrance ceremony in honor of Peter with family and friends will be held later this summer In Guilford, Vermont.
