A police officer saw a 31-year-old driver apparently asleep behind the wheel while stopped at a green light, Darien police said. The incident resulted in multiple charges.
Police gave this account, including accusations not proven in court:
The car was stopped at the corner of Camp Ave. and Hoyt Street shortly before 3:38 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16. The vehicle didn’t move for for “multiple” traffic light cycles.
The officer found the driver apparently asleep and roused him. When speaking with the driver, the officer smelled alcohol.
The driver couldn’t perform a standard field sobriety test and was arrested. The officer asked the driver whether or not he had any weapons in the car, and the driver said there was a handgun under the driver seat.
The man, a Shelton resident, was charged with driving while intoxicated, carrying a firearm while under the influence of alcohol and failure to obey a traffic light.
The driver refused a breathalyzer test at Darien Police Headquarters. He was released on paying 10% of a $250 bond and is scheduled to appear Jan. 3. in state Superior Court in Stamford.
