Jennie B. Coates, a 67-year resident of Darien, died Tuesday, December 8th in her home at Atria of Darien after a short illness. Her passing was peaceful, surrounded by her three loving daughters. She was 94.

Jennie B. Coates, 94, died Tuesday. The funeral will be on Friday, Dec. 18.

Jennie was born in Stamford, the daughter of the late John and Anna Bayonsky. She graduated from Stamford High School in 1938, and worked as an executive secretary at Pitney Bowes until her retirement in 1987.

She volunteered for many years at Darien Book Aid Plan, and was a member of St. John Roman Catholic Church in Darien, the Connecticut Audubon Society and Darien Senior Center Book Group. She was active in many activities in Atria Darien, especially the short story group.

She especially loved birding and nature. She travelled extensively, and enjoyed reading and the arts. Her three grandsons brought her much pleasure. She was always curious and eager to learn.

She leaves behind daughters Allison Lewis and husband Jim, of Middletown, Christine Lacerenza and husband Vic of Darien, and Suzanne Coates and Gus Lawlor of New Hampshire; grandsons Evan Graham and Matthew and Jack Lawlor; nephew Barry Bayon and grandnephew Andrew Bayon. She was predeceased by her husband Don Coates of Darien and her brother Harry Bayon.

A mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John Church, 1986 Post Road in Darien on Friday, Dec. 18 at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Darien.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Connecticut Audubon Society, 118 Oak Street, Hartford, CT 06106.
