Long-time Darien resident Donald Lloyd Fernow, 94, passed away of natural causes on Dec. 6.
Born Nov. 27, 1924 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to John and Maude Fernow, he was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Barbara Fernow, and survived by his son, Andrew Fernow, of Toronto and daughter, Laura Fernow, of Darien.
Donald grew up in Chicago and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he saw combat in France in 1944 and was later appointed to the Military Police, guarding General George Patton’s headquarters in Germany at the end of the war.
After returning home, Donald attended the University of Chicago and University of Southern California, where he received degrees in geology, business and film studies. From there, he pursued work in the financial services industry that encompassed a successful 25-year career on Wall Street as an investment analyst covering energy.

He will be fondly remembered as a loving father and devoted husband. Greatly admired for his strong work ethic and keen intellect, Donald was an avid reader of non-fiction with an almost encyclopedic knowledge of history, particularly Western civilizations. He was also a movie buff. Travel was his passion, and he visited over 150 countries. His travels included African safaris, jungle treks in the Amazon and a cruise to Antarctica.
Donald first settled in Darien in 1967 and continued to live in the community for more than 50 years, long after his retirement.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2018 at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien. Burial will follow with full military honors at Spring Grove Cemetery, Darien.
