To help families and students during the transition into a new school year, the Darien YMCA has developed the “Y Hybrid Learning Lab” for elementary school students in town.
The Learning Lab is a safe and structured environment at the Y that will allow students to attend virtual classes and have peer interaction under the supervision of YMCA staff and volunteers as the district follows a Hybrid Model in September.
— an announcement from the Darien YMCA
The Y Learning Lab will operate from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for Hindley, Tokeneke and Royle Schools and 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for Holmes and Ox Ridge, which coincides with their regular school hours.
Students will be grouped with similar grades with a maximum of 16 students per group, as per state guidelines. Each group will be separated from other groups. Our program will be located in the basketball gym at the YMCA, 2420 Post Road.
The groups will do all of their activities together and our staff will guide the group through their day and will be responsible for cleaning and sanitizing of program equipment between use.
Support staff and volunteers will help facilitate students getting onto their computers, logging into their classes and making sure they stay on task. It will be up to their classroom teacher to teach lessons and monitor individual progress.
Students will be outside as much as possible, playing games, making crafts and engaging in other activities. Activities will be selected based on the ability to practice social distancing and keep physical interactions between children to a minimum.
Students must bring the following:
• Their own laptop or tablet & charger (please charge fully prior to arriving)
• Headphones- these will be required for all participants
• Any required materials for assignments (i.e. paper, printed material, etc)
• Optional: Book, if your child completes assignments early

About the Darien YMCA
The Darien YMCA is a charitable, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) community service organization committed to putting Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind & body for all.
The Y: We’re for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
Correction: The program will be conducted in the gym at the Darien YMCA on the Post Road, not at individual school gyms, as originally reported. We misinterpreted the Y’s news release, which was unclear on that point.
