Connecticut ranks high among states with the fewest road fatalities per 100,000 people, but if you’re thinking of a road trip this summer to a neighboring state, they may be even safer.
Per 100,000 people, Connecticut had 8.2 deaths in 2020, the period covered by the study, while Massachusetts had the lowest rankings in the country, at 4.9; New York state (which has the most subway riders of any state), ranked No. 2, with 5.3; Rhode Island (ranked 4th safest) had 6.1.
New Hampshire (7.5) and New Jersey (6.3) also ranked higher than Connecticut.
With many travelers planning road trips for the summer, drivers need to be cautious of the possible dangers, including how safe the roads are, according to car “subscription” provider Finn Auto, which recently released a road safety study.
Finn Auto ranked each U.S. state based on their annual number of road fatalities and the number of road fatalities per 100,000 people to find the states for road trips.

Maybe the least safe part of your road trip is driving in Connecticut, but this region is still relatively the safest part of the country, according to the study.
Not only was Massachusetts the state with the safest roads, it was the third cheapest state for renting cars in the study, at $67 on average. The state also had one of the cheapest fuel prices in the study.
The study, which considered road fatalities, weather and prices for car rentals and hotels, found Arizona was the best overall state to take a road trip, followed by Texas (it didn’t hurt that the study counted hot and dry weather as a plus for a summer road trip) and Illinois. In the Northeast, Delaware ranked 4th; New Jersey, 10th; Massachusetts, 12th; and Rhode Island, 18th.
