In one of two mailbox thefts reported to Darien police on Friday, Feb. 7, a man stole an envelope containing a check — but the victim saw the theft happen and contained the damage.

The victim, a Beach Drive resident, told police he put the envelope in his mailbox and raised the flag. At 9:51 a.m., the man saw a small, gray SUV stop in front of his home. A male got out of the door at the front passenger seat and took the envelope out of the mailbox.

The victim told police he didn’t see the driver of the SUV. Before he even called police, the victim had his bank stop payment on the check. Police looked, but couldn’t find the gray SUV.

In the other incident, a resident who also saw mail being stolen from the mailbox reported a gray vehicle being used. The incidents occurred in different parts of town (the other was on Hickory Lane and occurred sometime before 2 p.m.).
