Carol Jean Swanson Brown, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Dec. 21, 2021. She was 85.
Carol was born on March 27, 1935 in Stamford, to Florence (Daly) and Carl Herbert Swanson.
Raised in Darien, Carol was a member of the Darien High School class of 1953. She went on to attend Woods Secretarial School in New York City and upon graduation was employed for several years at the former Bank of Stamford.
Carol is predeceased by the love of her life, Brooks C. Brown, whom she married in December 1957. Together, Brooks and Carol built a happy life and raised a loving family in the waterfront community of Rowayton.
Carol was a stay-at-home mom and was an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society, Person to Person, St Luke’s Church, and at the local election polls in Norwalk. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially at their vacation home in Pompano Beach, Florida.
When her children had grown, Carol re-entered the workforce as an administrative assistant at Business Journals, a trade magazine publisher in Norwalk, where she especially enjoyed helping to plan the annual fashion accessories industry charity ball.
Following retirement, Carol relocated to the Gulf Coast of Florida where she enjoyed many years with her long-time companion, Richard “Drake” Anderson. She loved spending time on the water, playing bridge with friends, volunteering with the Bay Island Garden and Decorating Committees and traveling to spend time with family and friends.
In addition to her husband, Carol is predeceased by her sister, Arlene Woodhall. She is survived by her children: Joni Hockspiel (Michael) of Charlotte, Scott (Susan) of Fairfield and Suzanne Osward (Charles) of Charlotte. She also leaves behind her grandchildren: Michael and Brooke Hockspiel, Brooks and Julia Brown and Luke Osward; and her partner, Richard “Drake” Anderson.
Carol’s family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at The Post at Providence for their kindness and compassionate care in Carol’s final days.
Carol will be interred alongside her husband in the columbarium at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Darien. A memorial service will be held in Connecticut at a later date.
