Metro-North work on improving the Camp Avenue railroad crossing is expected to shut down the street just to the east and west of the road from Friday, Aug. 21 to Thursday, Aug. 27, the Darien Department of Public Works has announced.

Train service will be suspended just for that weekend — Saturday, Aug. 22 to Sunday, Aug. 23, which the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) previously announced for various work projects on the New Canaan Branch. Bus service will be provided instead.

“Train service is expected to resume on schedule on Monday, Aug. 24,” the department announced.

“Complete road closure of Camp Avenue at the railroad/highway at-grade crossing will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, 2015 and is expected to remain closed until 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, 2015,” the town department announced.

Signs at the corner of Woodway Avenue and Hoyt Street to the north will redirect traffic to Hope Street in Stamford, according to a map on the Darien town website. The map also indicates that the entrance to Springdale Florist & Greenhouses at 28 Camp Ave. will remain available during the work.

Police officials at a previous Darien Police Commission meeting indicated the closure would take about a week. A later MTA announcement clarified that train service would not close at the same time — only on weekends. The Department of Public Works announcement confirms that the road at that spot will be closed about a week.

The MTA announcement said the closure of the line that weekend and on prior weekends would help not only railroad crossing work (which is also being done 0n Talmadge Hill Road from Aug. 14 to 20) but also work on the New Canaan Branch bridge over the Merritt Parkway, just north of the Talmadge Hill Railroad Station.

The MTA also said in its announcement, which included a train schedule: “Buses will operate 15-20 minutes earlier than scheduled trains. Listen for announcements and check local or express bus service to your destination while boarding.”
