Barbara Becker Hurley, 76, of Indian River Shores, Fl. and formerly of Allentown, Pa. and Darien, passed away in her sleep on April 2, 2017.

Barbara Hurley, 76, passed away April 2.

Born Oct. 26, 1940 in Paterson. N.J., she was the daughter of the late Richard and Lillian Becker of Vero Beach.

As a teenager, Barbara was a champion swimmer, and also a cheerleader and avid tennis player. She attended Convent of the Sacred Heart on Long Neck Point in Noroton and Manhattanville College. In later years she enjoyed tennis and dancing until her body refused to cooperate.

Barbara was a very generous person, and supported many local organizations, including the Mental Health Association, American Cancer Society, The Riverside Theatre, the Vero Beach Medical Center and the Vero Beach Museum of Art. In 2011 she was named the Indian River Outstanding Individual Philanthropist of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

She served for many years on the Board of Directors of the Riverside Theatre, and chaired several fashion shows on their behalf. She was a member of the John’s Island Club, and formerly the Wee Burn Country Club in Darien.

Barbara is survived by her daughter Valentine Schaible of The Woodlands Texas; and sons Scott (Molly) and Richard (Laura) of Vero Beach, Fl., and Thomas Hurley (Lisa) of North Palm Beach, Fl.

She was blessed by grandchildren Robert Schaible (Christine), Jenny Schaible Boyd (Tyler), Katie Schaible Dearman (Michael), Abbie Schaible, Catherine Hurley, William Hurley, Drew Hurley and Rebecca Hurley, doubly blessed by great-grandchildren Aubrey Lynn Boyd, Molly Boyd and twins Hunter and William Schaible.

She is also survived by her sister Jo Ann Becker and brother R. William Becker, as well as numerous cousins and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations to The Mental Health Association in Indian River County, 830 37th Place, Vero Beach FL 32960, or a charity of your choice.
