Alberta DeRosa died Jan. 9. Her funeral will be on Jan. 18.
Birdie was born in Stamford on Feb. 23, 1946, daughter of the late Anthony and Anna Vieter Carriera. She grew up in Darien, and raised her family in Woodbridge. Her later years were spent between Shelton and Stuart, Florida.
Birdie was known to be a spitfire, a feisty soul who enjoyed to dance and socialize whenever there was an opportunity. Her fun-loving nature touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her.
She loved meeting new people wherever she went, and she cherished the time she spent laughing with her friends, especially her long-time, dear friend, Pat.
Birdie had a passion for sports, particularly for her beloved New York Yankees and New York Giants. She would cheer them on with unwavering devotion and her enthusiasm was contagious.
Birdie also loved to travel, especially her adventures with Peter, taking many road trips around the country in their RV. Her favorite place though, was anywhere with sand and salt water; she had always felt most at peace when relaxing at the beach.
She enjoyed taking the time to watch her grandchildren participate in their various academic and athletic pursuits. She loved being around animals, especially the many dogs she had throughout her life.
Birdie will be deeply missed by her loved ones and all who knew her. May she rest in peace.
She is survived by her daughters, Beth DeRubeis of North Haven and Kristin DeRosa of Milford, New Hampshire; her grandchildren: Christian, Sebastian and Meghan DeRubeis and Luca and Max DeRosa; her brothers, Anthony and John Carriera; and her sister, Paula Turcer; her longtime companion, Peter Panaroni; and her nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Louisa Calka.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the ALS Association, a cause close to Birdie’s heart. Your generous donations will help support research and provide assistance to those affected by this debilitating disease.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Memorial Mass at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024 in St. John Bosco Parish at St. Mary Church, 731 Main St., Branford.
