Elizabeth (Lisa) Manning Leatham Mason passed away Dec. 25, 2023, at her home in Darien. She was 62 years old.
Born March 28, 1961, in Savannah, she resided in Darien for over 55 years.
Lisa had many accomplishments, but nothing brought her more joy than to be the mother of Caroline. They shared an incredible bond, with their love of creative arts, the beach, and their family. Lisa was incredibly proud of her role as Caroline’s mother, and it gave her endless hours of love and happiness.
Lisa attended Ohio Wesleyan University and The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, where she enhanced her love for creative arts and design. She was employed by the town of Darien as an integral member of the Building Department for over 20 years. She became highly regarded, building lasting friendships with her colleagues and the community she served.
Lisa, known to many as the Red Headed Mermaid, was known for her quilt-making. She created multiple award-winning quilts and served as President of the NYC Metro Modern Quilt Guild from 2013 until 2015, and also interim vice president of the Southern Connecticut Modern Quilt Guild.
She was gifted with the talent for the use of and combinations of colorful fabrics that produced amazing quilts. She gifted her precious quilts to family and friends, too many to count, and they are cherished keepsakes of her eternal love. During her lifetime she also donated quilts to raise money for causes she was involved in.
Lisa was happiest surrounded by family and friends, especially her large extended family in Door County, Wisconsin. She created connections between people and was known for her infectious smile and laughter. Lisa was a girl scout leader, an unofficial camp counselor, queen of tie dye, painted rocks, and all things creative. She willingly shared her creative gifts with all she knew and will always be known for her “Sweat Shop Sundays.”
Lisa is survived by her daughter Caroline Mason; her sisters, Gay Dingeman (Jamie) and Betsy LaFontaine (Jim); her brothers, John Leatham (Susan), Douglas Leatham (Jessica); many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was supported through her journey by many dear friends, especially Alison and Maggie.
The family would also like to thank the amazing doctors and staff of The Bennet Cancer Center who provided exceptional care and support.
A celebration of life gathering will be held Jan. 27 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Piedmont Club, 152 Hecker Ave., Darien. A number of her quilts will be on display.
