After a traffic stop just after midnight Monday morning, May 18 an officer found a variety of illegal drugs on the back seat and in a passenger’s purse, an open container of alcohol and along with a 9mm Ruger handgun underneath the driver’s seat, police said. A wallet with $1984 in cash in it was found in the door pocket of the driver, who was charged with driving under the influence, on top of numerous other charges, police said

Darien police gave this further account of what happened, including accusations not proven in court:

The officer first saw the man’s car, a Mitsubishi Mirage, turning from the westbound traffic lane on the Post Road onto Rings End Road, and a short time later, the officer saw the same car emerge from Rings End Road and get on the Post Road, this time headed east, the way it came. The officer followed the car. After seeing it cross the double yellow line over into the westbound side of the road, the officer pulled over the car. When the officer spoke with the driver, Kevin Alvarez, 21, of Bridgeport, the officer could smell the strong odor of marijuana and saw two cases of alcoholic beverages on the car’s back seat, along with an open beer bottle in the cup holder of the center console.
