United Church of Rowayton Joins Operation Gratitude in Sending Letters, Care Packages to Troops

The United Church of Rowayton is launching a local Operation Gratitude campaign, sending letters and care packages to veterans and deployed U.S. troops. — an announcement from Rowayton Community Church
“It gives everyone an opportunity to take a personal role in honoring members of our military services on Veterans Day, Nov. 11,” said Bill Peltz, chairman of the UCR Board of Christian Outreach. “Adults and children are welcome to join in,” Peltz said. Letters can start out by simply saying, “I am writing to thank you for your service.” Letters can be handwritten or typed.

Children will start the school year with new backpacks filled with school must-haves, thanks to the backpack drive conducted annually by the United Church of Rowayton for the Department of Children and Families (DCF). — an announcement from the United Church of Rowayton’s Board of Christian Outreach, followed by information on a similar school supplies drive from the Darien Human Services Department. From now until Aug. 15, the meeting house behind the church at 210 Rowayton Avenue will be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to receive backpacks. Suggested items are tissues, colored pencils, pens, crayons, geometric stencils, compasses, erasers, rulers, tape, file folders, glue sticks, scissors, notebooks, paper, pencils, pencil sharpeners, white out, staplers, staples and calculators.

Jazz Quartet Performs Sunday Morning, April 29 at United Church of Rowayton

A special music program featuring a jazz quartet will be presented by the United Church of Rowayton this Sunday, April 29, 2018, at 10:15 a.m. All are invited to the annual event. The theme this year is “Music to Uplift Your Soul.”

Renowned musicians in the group include Rob Aries, piano; John Matroianni, saxophone; and Bobby Leonard, drums.

“The inspirational service will feature reflections and readings complemented by hymns arranged with a jazz beat,” says Pastor John Livingston. “Music lovers and jazz aficionados will enjoy this unique musical experience” said David Snyder, bassist and church member who arranged the music and leads the quartet. The church is located at 210 Rowayton Ave. in Rowayton.

Easter baskets with chocolate bunnies will bring Easter magic to needy children, as the United Church of Rowayton follows its annual tradition of collecting baskets for local youngsters. Everyone in the community is invited to join in the drive. Suggested items to put in a basket include chocolate bunnies, toys, small games, coloring books, crayons and wrapped candy. Baskets can be dropped off at the Meeting House directly behind the church at 210 Rowayton Ave. from now until Thursday, March 29.

Special Music Service Sunday, March 11 at United Church of Rowayton

The public is invited to attend a special music service entitled “Abound in Hope,” combining a 10-piece orchestra and a 35-member choir at the United Church of Rowayton, 210 Rowayton Ave., at 10:15 a.m., Sunday, March 11. “The ‘Abound in Hope’ service is a celebration of the days leading up to Easter,” says Pastor John Livingston. — an announcement from the United Church of Rowayton
The orchestra and choir will be under the direction of Marsha Hall, the church’s music director. All the musicians are from the local area. The ensemble will be performing “The Tree of Peace” by the internationally applauded composer and arranger Gwyneth Walker, D.M.A.
The text for “The Tree of Peace” was adapted from the Jon Greenleaf Whittier poem “O Brother Man.”
