Man Struck by Train Near Noroton Heights Station Identified as 50-Year-Old from New Canaan

Authorities on Monday identified the man fatally struck by a train in Darien last week as a New Canaan resident. John Hickey, 50, died after an eastbound train struck him near Noroton Heights station at approximately 7:35 p.m. Thursday, Metro-North Railroad spokesman Aaron Donovan told NewCanaanite.com. It isn’t clear why he was on the tracks. The Metropolitan Transit Authority Police and Darien Police Department are investigating. The New Haven-bound train had left Grand Central Terminal at 6:49 p.m.

Public Hearing on More Cameras at Darien and Other Train Stations

The state Department of Transportation wants to install more video surveillance cameras next year to improve security at various train stations from Darien to Westport, and it will hold a public hearing to get your views on Oct. 17 in Norwalk. Here’s the entire announcement from the department:

The Connecticut Department of Transportation will be conducting a public information meeting for State Project No. 0300-0202 concerning the Network Infrastructure Upgrades Project. Department of Transportation personnel will be available during the meeting to discuss the project.

One Moped Stolen From Noroton Heights Station Monday, Another From Darien Station Wednesday

Two mopeds were reported stolen within three days of each other last week, one on Monday at the Noroton Heights Railroad Station, the other on Wednesday at the Darien Railroad Station. Darien police described each incident this way:
Noroton Heights Railroad Station
At about 6:50 a.m., Monday, Aug. 20, the first victim drove his moped to the Noroton Heights station and parked it there. When he returned at 6:50 p.m., not only was the moped (which he valued at $1,000) gone, but so was a jacket (valued at $100) that was inside the saddle bag, along with a helmet (valued at $40). The victim told police he still had the key to the vehicle, but that it wasn’t secured to anything at the station.

State Says Noroton Heights Station Platforms To Be Replaced By Next June, Town DPW Director Thinks by Christmas

The project to replace all the concrete platforms at Noroton Heights Railroad Station is officially not due to be over until June 2019, according to the state Department of Transportation, but Darien Public Works Director Edward Gentile doesn’t believe it. He thinks commuters will be more likely to be using the new platform by this coming Christmas. The project got off to a slow start, with plenty of pauses, Gentile said, while the Manafort construction company became more accustomed to the work. Now that they have, the pace should continue to moving at a good clip, he said. According to a town DPW report Gentile gave to the Board of Selectmen before Tuesday mornings town government department heads meeting with the board, the fourth phase of the project, covering the platform around the station building and the northern (Heights Road-side) entrance to the pedestrian bridge, should be starting by Aug.
