Jeep Stolen Overnight from Outside Sunswyck Rd Home — Police: No Signs of Forced Entry

For two weeks, a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee sat in the driveway of a Sunswyck Road home, and the owner told police that she believes it was locked and the keys weren’t in it. But when she found at 5 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 27 that the Jeep was missing (she’d last seen it the night before, at about 9:30 p.m.), there were no signs of forced entry. Thefts of vehicles that are unlocked and with the keys inside are almost the only kinds of vehicle thefts that happen overnight outside Darien homes. When a vehicle window is smashed in order for a thief to get in a car, police usually find broken glass on the pavement.

One car was — briefly — missing and two other vehicles were entered in Darien on two different nights last weekend. As usual, all three vehicles apparently hadn’t been locked. Darien police provided these details on each incident:
Stolen: Libby Lane, Overnight Friday to Saturday
A 2012 Ford Fusion was stolen from the driveway of 16 Libby Lane sometime overnight, the owner discovered shortly before 8:32 a.m., Saturday, when he called police. The man said that when he parks the car at home, he typically leaves the keys hidden inside it but locks the car and uses a second key for access. He wasn’t sure if he had locked the car that night.

Police Chief: Thefts From (and of) Unlocked Vehicles Continues to Follow Pretty Uniform Pattern

Police Chief Ray Osborne recently responded to questions from Darien Police Commission Chairman J. Paul Johnson about the pattern typically followed by thieves stealing from vehicles Darien drivers leave unlocked outside overnight. “We’ve had some success in making arrests,” Osborne said. “The Detective Division is working very hard on this latest rash, and we do have some viable leads on that. We’ll be following up as best we can.” “Do we have any idea whether this is a kind of planned group that is doing this, or just individuals?”

A van left with its keys in it overnight in the driveway off the Post Road was found on the roadway at about 1 a.m., Sunday, less than a quarter of a mile from three teenagers who were then arrested, police said. Darien police described what happened with this account, including accusations not proven in court:

An officer on patrol saw two males walking north on Hollow Tree Ridge Road close to the Post Road, where plenty of unlocked motor vehicles have been entered, stolen from and in some cases stolen, especially in the past year or two. The officer stopped the two and then saw a third male walking from the driveway of a nearby residence. More officers were dispatched to the area. Just before arriving there, one of the officers saw an abandoned Ford Econoline van on the Post Road, partly blocking its intersection with Hollow Tree Ridge Road.
